Get to Know Ry Heller, Lead Installer

Q: What’s your role on the TSS team?
I’m the system designer and crew leader.

Q: Is it true you’re a local native?
I am, born and raised in Takilma and Ashland.

Q: What career steps did you take to get where you’re at today?
My first step was in construction, general house building. During that time there was a lot of development in green building. I saw an ad for the Renewable Energy program at Lane Community College and signed up. After I graduated I landed a job for a local solar contractor in Eugene and worked there for seven years before moving back to Southern Oregon with my family in 2012.

Q: What’s your favorite part of the job?
I’ve always enjoyed taking a job from start to finish. Here at True South I get to engineer a project on paper and then take it through construction.

Q: Where do you see technology going in the next five to ten years?
I really feel like we’ll be moving towards micro grids. Communities will be able to be more sustainable in terms of not depending on outside inputs. Battery technology and electric car integration will be a big part of our energy independence. I really got into this field to be a part of building more sustainable communities and we’re doing it!

Q: What do you do for fun in the sun?
We (my family and I) really like to get into nature; hiking, swimming in the rivers, fishing, and mushroom hunting. I recharge my batteries out in nature.
